Leishmaniasis disease outbreak prevention
There’s been an outbreak of Leishmaniasis disease among the already vulnerable displaced Yazidis on and around Mount Sinjar. Leishmaniasis is caused by infection through Leishmania parasites. which causes skin sores, and visceral leishmaniasis, which affects several internal organs, (usually spleen, liver, and bone marrow.) It could be fatal.
There are around 700,000 Yazidis in the world, and more than half are displaced and are subject to discrimination & intimidation by the Kurds. As many of us remember: 2 years ago, many Yazidis were killed and many of their girls were taken as sex slaves by their Arab neighbors and ISIS. Yazidis are not Kurds, but some Kurds were Yazidis that were forced converted to Islam by Kurds during Ottoman empire.
I visited Sinjar Mountain in January and almost everyone there lives in tents in very harsh conditions, but it’s the only safe haven for them.
It costs around $10 for medication per child.
